What is a "good" thesis?

This question could be answered in so many different ways for different people.

There are those who watch our presentation that we all hope in the end will say, "that was good! (or great!)". For those bystanders, they will judge our presentation based on multiple factors of how we give the presentation. That is our voice projection, our word choice, our gestures, and our powerpoint. They will most likely be biased about our topics. If they are interested in music and the thesis involves music, they will most likely listen attentively. If they hate the book the thesis centers around, they may choose to zone out and not care, because after all they are forced to watch these presentations. Unfortunately, there may be nothing we can do for these people except present to the best of our ability and try to make our point clear.

Then there is us, my fellow "seminites", who judge ourselves harshly. We critically analyze our chosen topic and claims. A good thesis for us goes much deeper than the final presentation. We need to find sound evidence, good arguments, and create original ideas. Then we must defend those ideas and findings. A good thesis for us is one that grabs our attention, makes us excited and want to learn more. One that we can proudly say we came up with. I think we all want the same thing: something original, something "smart", something interesting, something profound.

Good will mean something different to all of us. I may think Suzie's is good, because it could potentially help polar bears. I may think Katelyn's is good, because she made relevant arguments and sounded confident in her final presentation. I may think Kyle's was good, because he had a new and creative idea most of us would never have thought of. We all have different strengths, and if we play off of those strengths we could potentially all have "good" theses!

  1. Emily! I think this is such a good answer, and I love the pictures! So many different people are going to have so many different opinions based on their perspective! It is going to be quite difficult(if possible) to please everyone.
