Avatar

So I was watching Avatar, great movie by the way! And it got be wondering, what is Avatar really telling us? By the end of the movie (and for me even at the beginning) you are completely on the Avatar's side and the humans are seen as the "bad" people. And why shouldn't they be considered bad? They are trying to destroy these people's lives and entire existence. But why make it the humans? Why not the Avatars be the ones trying to take over the human world? They could still have all of the same cool effects, the roles would just be reversed. I guess the main question is just why? What was the movie trying to portray, if anything. There has to be something, though. This movie was 3 hours long and quite moving if I say so myself. Not only that, but this movie was a HUGE success! All I'm saying is there has to be more to it than just 3 hours of really awesome effects...

  1. There definitely is something to this movie--for a lot of reasons. It's a success in a lot of ways and people are crazy for it, but there's also a lot of failures and a lot of people who hate it. I'm sure there's something there then.

Keep the diversity of ideas and interests coming, Emily. It's great that you can be inspired to think intellectually about everything around you. It will help immensely here.

  2. I like the questions that you are asking about htis movie. Especially the thought about what they are trying to say about humans. I feel like that question can really bring you somewhere. Many movies make some wort of claim about humanity so you could draw many connections and make your own claim!

  3. I thought that one thing AVATAR did was make the U.S. military look bad and evil. I think this is an interesting question to explore!

  4. I like Jessica's suggestion. That theme of the movie opens up a lot of possibilities for research- pop culture and approval of government, etc.

  5. I don't think there's anything special about the plot. It's a tried and true story. I think the appeal is more in the immersion of the movie.. how real the world is. That could be something to look into.
