Thoughts on Holistic Living

This isn't a solid idea yet, but I thought I'd post my thoughts.
I've been thinking about alternative ways for healing; incorporating things such as meditation, yoga, healthy eating, etc. Over the summer volunteering at woman's hospital we had a speaker come talk to us about holistic nursing. For those of you who don't know what that is, holistic nurses strive to look at people as a whole. By this I mean they are opposed to just sending patients home with a bottle of pills to treat a few symptoms. They look at every aspect of the patient, and as they say the mind, body, and spirit. The nurse who spoke to us was a nurse in the NICU so an example she gave was that she wo
re little cotton balls soaked in some calming oils so that when she held the babies, the babies were smelling that calming fragrance. I'm not sure if I could make all of this into my own thesis, but I'm really interested in alternative ways of healing.

I think by introducing these ideas and just this knowledge early enough, the health of people could be benefitted in the long run. What if I formulated a few lesson plans for schools to provide as enrichment type classes? Students, by choice, could learn about healthy eating, herbal remedies, meditation, and other things. This sounds pretty cool to me, and I'd certainly take these classes!

Any ideas??

  1. Something related to this, and something you referred to, is the tendency for doctors to give people pills to "fix" their patients' problems. In a number of cases, the pills do not solve the problem but simply address the symptoms. You could combat an issue within the way doctors go about treating patients also. The holistic side of treatment would definitely fit in there. I like where you're headed... this topic is definitely important to everyone and personal to a lot. Families have been broken due to (pain) pills being so casually distributed to patients, for example.

  2. Cool idea. It's definitely an interesting thing to explore, especially considering how patients seem to be pushing for less medical intervention on something or in certain ways.

(I also see that this may lead you back to something with babies/mothers...)

  3. I think that it would be fascinating to look at treatments even from other cultures and their ways of healing. Some of these treatments from the east have already made their way here, but I'm sure that their are some that haven't been seen in the US yet or are not very prominent here.

  4. I really like this idea! And Tarini's, too! Alternative treatments that may not be as scary as the ones that are impossible to pronounce and may be better for you in some ways sounds interesting.
